Raising Little Geeks – Geek Dad #howtodad #starwars

Being a Geek Dad is not about finding ways to get your kids to enjoy “Geekdom”. It’s about finding ways to let your kids enjoy what THEY like and seeing that there is a bit of Geek in everyone. It’s about encouraging your children to not be embarrassed over liking Star Trek, Superheros, knitting or coloring. It’s about showing them that it’s OK to not like what everyone else does, or vice versa.
We constantly here that the ‘world’ wants kids to grow up confident, as good leaders, strong, decision makers, not followers of the crowd. But that same ‘system’ strives to tell the same kids what that means and how they should do it.
As parents, we need to lay the “Foundation” for confident leaders… Good way to remember this?
You don’t convey to your children “Smart people think this way, and you are smart.. so you will think this way too…”
You convey: Smart people think…. and it’s OK to think.
That way, they are comfortable to agree with someone else on their own merit, or not. If my son turns out to like Superman, that’s awesome. It’s OK that he likes the same hero as me! But I want him to like Superman because HE likes superman, not just because I’m the Dad..

Star Wars – The Force Awakens – Mine and Parental Review *SPOLIERS* #starwars #review

Star Wars – The Force Awakens  – Parental Review REVIEW – 4/5 STARS (With reasons…) I battled back and forth about writing this review opening night. The main reason that I didn’t, was simply because I needed to sort through it all and not write from a ‘fan high’ perspective. Overall, I thought the movie was great. But there were a few things that popped into my head while watching it, that I shoved down to make room for the ‘drool’ factor during my opening night enjoyment. Remember. This review…

I Told My Daughter Not to Grow Up – Then She Did This… #geekdad #birthdaygirl #happybirthday

Today is my daughter’s birthday. She turns five years old. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about that yet. I’ve had a flood of different emotions over the past week leading up to today. Now that it is here, I have no clue what I actually feel. I’m all over the place!     I still think of her as a baby…. I wonder if that will ever change?   Of course, this is what she ‘really’ looks like… Amazing… beautiful… stunning. I tell her all the time, as…

Dads That Work Too Much – A Different Look #geekdad

One of the loudest criticisms of Fathers, has been the lack of time they spend with their children. I’ve read countless articles and opinion pieces on the Dad that is never there. Over the past seven years as a Geek Dad, I’ve made it a point to NOT be that type of Dad. I get to go home on lunch and see my kids, take them to school sometimes, have one-on-0ne time, out of the blue. I relish every moment I have with my kids. I’ve been blessed with a…

Should Kids Look Up To Superheroes? #geekdad #superman

Yesterday, I had a semi-productive afternoon! I came home from work, had dinner (because my wife is awesome), and went outside to do stuff around the garden and the garage. The entire time I was out there, my son was my side-kick. He helped me weed the garden, water the plants, even mix the fish fertilizer for our vegetable garden. You should have seen his reaction to the SMELL of that stuff. Priceless! After we finished cleaning up some stuff in the garage, we got to work on brushing the…

Time Away, Thrifting, Kids and Camping! #geekdad #pyrex #30seconds

I actually started writing this article a couple weeks back, right before Father’s day… but then I got busy! I’m sure you all know how that goes. Lately, it’s been a busy that I could do without… but thankfully that “busy” changed over the past week. Father’s day turned out to be a Geek Dad dream come true! Let me try and explain. As a kid, I grew up camping. Everything from the Adirondack mountains to cabins in Allegheny State Park in NY! I have memories of family any friends…
