Star Wars Day, May the Fourth be with you. #starwars, #maythefourth, #skywalker

Today is May the Fourth, or as we call it in Geekdom, Star Wars Day. I’m not really sure how the whole thing started but it’s awesome ┬áthat it did. Today is the day where all Star Wars fans and geeks alike can celebrate their geek-ness with pride. I celebrate it with my kids every year. I give them some small Star Wars related present, stickers, Pez, coloring book, etc., they all wear their Star Wars apparel, and sometimes we even have Star Wars themed dinners. Last year we had…

Daddy Daughter Date #geekdad #UNO #timhortons

Daddy Daughter Date   The weekend was coming to an end and I was feeling pretty tired. It was a productive few days and we just finished having a few friends visit that Sunday afternoon! I was sitting in the living room with my wife and kids, feeling pretty relaxed. My daughter asked, “Dad, are we going anyplace tonight?” Now, you have to understand that we had been “going” all day. Church in the morning, picking up lunch, visitors all day. It was a pretty hectic (but good) day! “No…”…

Luke’s YouTube Channel, Proud Geek Dad. #geekdad, #gravityfalls, #stopmotin

My son and best buddy’s interest in stop motion video has been going on for a few years. He has been creating them for a while and he is getting better and better. He also has a love for Gravity Falls. All the stuff he shows on his new You Tube Channel was made by him without any help. He now has a 6 foot table and a decent size area in our Man Cave that is set up just for him to do his videos on. I am very…

Raising Little Geeks – Geek Dad #howtodad #starwars

Being a Geek Dad is not about finding ways to get your kids to enjoy “Geekdom”. It’s about finding ways to let your kids enjoy what THEY like and seeing that there is a bit of Geek in everyone. It’s about encouraging your children to not be embarrassed over liking Star Trek, Superheros, knitting or coloring. It’s about showing them that it’s OK to not like what everyone else does, or vice versa.
We constantly here that the ‘world’ wants kids to grow up confident, as good leaders, strong, decision makers, not followers of the crowd. But that same ‘system’ strives to tell the same kids what that means and how they should do it.
As parents, we need to lay the “Foundation” for confident leaders… Good way to remember this?
You don’t convey to your children “Smart people think this way, and you are smart.. so you will think this way too…”
You convey: Smart people think…. and it’s OK to think.
That way, they are comfortable to agree with someone else on their own merit, or not. If my son turns out to like Superman, that’s awesome. It’s OK that he likes the same hero as me! But I want him to like Superman because HE likes superman, not just because I’m the Dad..
